The Sisal Carpet – our durable, robust all-rounder

Our sisal carpets are manufactured in Austria, from spinning the sisal yarn to weaving and packaging. This difference is also reflected in the quality of the carpets. We would be happy to make special designs for you, such as carpets with carpets. Oval carpets are also possible by means of a template! If you are interested, our staff will be happy to answer your questions.

We are also happy to produce sisal carpets for you as runners or layouts. In order to give you a better impression of the goods, we will be happy to send you a free sample of the products in advance.

Basic material: Sisalagave comes from the arid regions of the Mexican highlands. It is up to 12 years old, blooms and fructifies only once, and then dies. Every year, the lowest leaves, up to 1. 2 m long, are separated for fiber extraction. The extremely durable agave fiber is extracted from them and spun into yarns of different thicknesses.

Special requests: If you use sisal carpets as stepladders even without 4 sides edging, then please let us know. We will make you an offer without obligation.
If you have any further questions, we are happy to advise you without obligation. Just contact us!

Worth knowing about sisal fibers for sisal carpets

The fibers from the leaves of some agaves are called sisal, especially the sisal agave (Agave sisalana). Sisal is a relatively young natural fiber, which is processed into ropes, ropes, yarn, sisal carpets, and many other products. For example, as a filler for mattresses or as a polishing agent for technical purposes. Sisal is not suitable as a textile fiber, but applications in the field of composite materials are being tested.
Sisal is extremely tough and tensile, but in particular, it is characterized by its unusual stiffness compared to other fibers and is therefore ideal for sisal carpets.

Worth knowing about the harvest

The plants can usually be harvested once a year, but under particularly favorable conditions up to three harvests per year are possible. The time of harvest in the year is arbitrary, which allows a high degree of flexibility in the selection of the harvest time. About 13 of the 2-meter long and 1 kg heavy leaves each form a ring around the stem. In one harvest, about 50 leaves, i. e. 4 rings, are harvested. The leaves are cut off at the base during harvest, the prickly tip is cut off and the leaves are bundled before the fiber is broken up.

Fiber Production

The sisal fibers are separated from the actual leaf tissue in the fiber digestion process. Nowadays, this is usually done by machines. The proportion of dry fiber in the total weight of the fresh leaves is 5%, and after the fiber has been broken up the fibers are bundled and soaked in water for about 10 hours. They are then dried in the sun and to remove the remaining parenchymal tissue and short fibers, the fibers are combed or beaten.

Quality classification of sisal fibers
The fibers are evaluated according to their quality and classified according to characteristics such as color or roughness. The best qualities, for example, the Brazilian “Superior”, must be of light cream white, clean, fully matured, particularly resistant, soft and smooth, and free of adhesions or production residues. In addition, the fibers are marked according to their length.

Since we always receive many requests for cleaning and care of sisal carpets, we would like to briefly list the most important tips on this page:

Tip 1: Sisal carpets – care recommendation!

It is best to vacuum the sisal carpet regularly with a powerful vacuum cleaner or brush vacuum cleaner.
Do not use water for cleaning! The natural fiber must not be soaked, as the carpet can change its dimensions or color. In addition, there may be waves or water spots.

Tip 2: Sisal carpets – remove stains correctly!

The treatment varies depending on the type of stain. In principle, the following applies:

  • the fresher the stain, the easier the removal

  • absorb the coarsest dirt with an absorbent, white or uncolored cloth

  • Remove solid components with knife backs or spoons

Dirt stains can be treated with a carpet cleaner, which you can find here. We recommend the Jeikner Special Shampoo for light spots. Stubborn stains can be used with the Jeikner maxi cleaning set. This removes almost all stains. However, there are stains that cause discoloration of the carpet fiber, these stains can only be treated with bleach, but this causes bright spots on the carpet (see tip 3).

Tip 3: Sisal carpets – discoloration

If the carpet has lighter patches, you can try to repaint them with a tea of similar color to the carpet (e. g. peppermint tea or black tea). Try it on a small spot and only when you are satisfied with the result, apply it to a larger area!

Tip 4: Sisal carpets – wave formation

If your sisal carpet is rippling, which is most likely to happen with runners, you can spray the carpet with hot, best distilled water and strip the wave. It may be necessary to weigh the area until it dries out.
